Hosted by N’jaila Rhee
We are facing a global crisis where sex workers of color, trans sex workers, and intersecting communities are experiencing backlash due to anti-trans sanctions, policing, and de-platforming that silences our voices. The “Fight Back” workshop will train grassroots advocates in crisis prevention, media relations, preservation of vital free speech protections, and mutual aid for those directly impacted. This workshop supports the next generation of adult industry professionals, sex worker rights advocates, and trans rights activists in building resilience during these challenging times. Participants will also be connected to current urgent action organizing and relevant resources.
This workshop is designed for professionals who want to learn how to ally with and support grassroots efforts and for those who want to become active but have never engaged with sex worker communities before. While many may know about historic actions such as the AIDS Quilt or ACT UP erecting a giant condom on Senator Jesse Helms’ home, fewer are aware of what activists are doing today. This workshop aims to bridge that knowledge gap, introducing the actions, protests, and visibility strategies that achieve results.
Members of the trans and sex worker communities will lead this boot camp workshop. It will include presentations, interactive exercises to build understanding and solidarity, and the distribution of resources for participants to take home. This session is an excellent introduction to the proposed “Building Movements: Sex Worker Rights and Intersectional Movement Building” workshop.
At the start of the session, attendees will complete a four-question survey on their skills and knowledge via a smartphone-friendly link and will be asked to fill it out again before leaving. Participants who stay to complete the final survey will be incentivized with prizes.
